LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE) & ELECTIVES

Spanish 1

This first level is an introduction to language and culture through the development of proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Spanish 2

The second level is an expansion of Level I, continuing with a more complex study of the content and structure of the language and a higher level of linguistic competency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Cultural studies are continued.

Spanish 3

The third level continues to stress language skills for understanding and proficiency.  Cultural studies are an integral part of the course.  Studies are prepared for the NYS Comprehensive Regents Language Examination.

Latin

This course exposes students to Roman culture and language, stressing both fluent reading and speaking of the language.  In addition, Latin I will emphasize the composition of Latin discourse.  Students are expected to master the basic grammatical rules of declension and conjugation appropriate for an introductory Latin course.  Finally, students can expect to engage in some of the classic Latin works of Vergil and Cicero.

Electives

Introducing the World of Education

This course will introduce students to the challenging but wonderful world of teaching. As this elective course is writing and reading intensive as well as practical, its curriculum adheres to the Core Curriculum standards set forth by New York State Department of Education (NYSED) as educators seek to assure that our students are College and Career Ready.  Students will have the opportunity not only to delve into the educational resources available from established educators but also to observe teachers in the classroom.  Students can also expect to student teach in the class or classes of their choice under the supervision of the assigned instructor.  At the end of the course, students will submit a portfolio that includes but is not limited to a statement of professional goals, a personal philosophy of education statement, four case study analyses, and sample lessons.

Public Speaking I

God has called each of His children to confidently deliver his message in an effective way. Public speaking is America's #1 fear and also the #1 quality that employers want their potential hires to have. This course will give students a safe space to practice, gain skills, and garner the confidence to manage and thrive in public speaking situations. Throughout the semester students will perform and write numerous speeches. They will also learn to evaluate other speakers, texts, and speeches to help themselves grow. Students will practice with small, mini speeches and have 3-4 major speech assignments that we will develop, organize and perform in a respectful classroom environment focused on growth and engagement.

Public Speaking II

This course will give students a safe space to practice, gain skills, and garner the confidence to manage and thrive in public speaking situations. Throughout the semester students will deepen their understanding of logic and informal fallacies. Students will acquire the ability to communicate with impact through storytelling and the creation of a dramatic narrative. Students will have the opportunity to apply these skills to a simulated work environment. They will also study how to effectively pitch an idea, create a presentation and utilize what was learned, to further the life skills that will be an intricate part of their future.
