SECONDARY EDUCATION (6TH-12TH GRADE) COURSE OVERVIEW

At Victory Christian Academy, students are encouraged and challenged to become life-long learners. Our Common Core-aligned academic program prepares students for the demands of college and professional careers.

Our courses achieve excellence because we employ a wide repertoire of teaching and learning strategies and students are actively involved in the learning process. Our active classroom environments encourage students to engage in the content, glean from their peers, and still master the CCLS approved by NYSED.

Besides a rigorous Common-Core rooted curriculum, VCA also offers College Board AP courses to eligible students.  The Advanced Placement curriculum offers a demanding introductory college-level course that prepares students not only for the demands of higher-ordered thinking required for college but also for the national AP exams.  Students who score a “3” or higher may be eligible for college credit depending on the requirements and policies of individual colleges and universities.   Interested students must submit an application to the appropriate department and be interviewed by the AP Coordinator to be considered for the program.  parents and students should note that there are fees for each AP exam a student wishes to take.

Mathematics

The demands of Common Core Mathematics Standards challenge students to strengthen their skills in order for students to meet the College and Career Readiness standards. Focus, coherence, and rigor are stressed, allowing our faculty to teach fewer topics with more depth and practice for students. This in turn increases the likelihood that students will understand and master mathematics concepts for their respective courses. With the demands of a technologically-based 21st century global community only increasing, our curriculum framework prepares students not only for college but for a satisfying, productive career in the global economic landscape. One of the important goals of the Mathematics Department is to help students develop an expertise in the following Mathematical Practices: 1. Make sense of the problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4. Model with mathematics to solve everyday problems 5. See appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (Source: NYSED site)

Science and Technology

The New York State Learning Standards for Science incorporate the following:

English

The Victory Christian Academy Department of English challenges students to drink deeply from the wells of Biblical, classical, and contemporary fiction and nonfiction. In addition, the curriculum and classes will equip students to think, read, and write critically using a variety of teaching methods aligned with the Next Generation Standards (NGS) as well as the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCR). Furthermore, the English Department stresses the importance of college preparatory and career-ready writing skills that will prepare students for the ever-evolving 21st-century global community.

History

Students are not receptacles of information; they are educated, well-prepared producers of research, ideas, and observations that are innovative and engaging. The VCA Department of History will challenge students to ascertain not only the significance of past historical events but also to discern their connection to them. Further, students will employ a number of skills as they journey through both World History and American history.

Language Other Than English (LOTE) and Elective Courses

Students are offered several language other than English (LOTE) courses that will fulfil NYS requirements for obtaining a diploma.  Students are also able to participate in elective courses that not only challenge and open their minds to explore unique course material, but challenges the application of the classroom experience into daily life.

Physical Education

In addition to core classes, students participate in physical education and health and wellness courses.
